History of Golf
Origins and Early Development:
- Ancient Games: Golf has a history dating back to games with balls and sticks. Unmistakably early forms of golf-like games were played in ancient Rome and China. The formalizing of this game is credited to the Scots, but a similar game was played in other parts of Europe.
- 15th Century – Modern Golf: The more modern game of golf took shape during the 15th century in Scotland. One of the oldest golf courses in the world is the Old Course at St Andrews, which was established about 1552. Golf became very popular in Scotland, with the open field playing ground being a common area for the game.
Rules and Standardization:
- 1744 – First Rules of Golf: The first known rules of golf were drafted in 1744 by the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith. Written down to try and standardize how the game was being played, they included provisions for scoring and conduct.
- 1764—The 18-Hole Course Born: The course in St. Andrews was originally designed to have 22 holes, but in 1764 it was remodelled into what became the standard for every golf course: an 18-hole format.
Professionalization and Expansion:
1860: The First Open Championship: The first Open Championship, often referred to as simply The Open and the inaugural major golf championship, took place at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland back in 1860. It was the very first major golf tournament and marked the start of professional golfing.
1894 – Establishment of the USGA: United States Golf Association was established to bring about uniformity into the rules of golf and also the different tournaments that are held in the United States. The USGA has worked tirelessly in the promotion and organization of the game within America.
- 1916: Founding of the PGA: The Professional Golfers’ Association of America was founded in 1916. One of the four major championships in professional golf, the PGA Championship, was first held in 1916.
Golden Age and Modernization:
- 1920s-1950s – The Golden Age of Golf: During this era, back in the 1920s and 1930s, golf legends like Bobby Jones were the very first great American golfer. He won the Grand Slam of golf—the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, Open Championship, and Amateur Championship—in 1930. Stars like Gene Sarazen and Ben Hogan also made a name for themselves during this period.
- 1960s-1970s: The Era of Tiger Woods: More global attention came into golf with the rise of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player in the 1960s and 1970s. Another, probably most dominant and influential, personality who ever played the game emerged in the 1990s—Tiger Woods. His numerous records and further exposure increased golf’s reach across the globe.
Modern Era and Globalization:
- 2000s-Present – Expansion and Technology: In the 21st century, golf has truly globalized. The Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup reflect international competition in the sport. Added to that are recent technology advances—from high-definition television to digital media—further improving the exposure of the sport and how it engages its fan base.
- Ladies Golf: Ladies golf has also experienced tremendous growth. In 1950 came the formation of the LPGA, the Ladies Professional Golf Association. Since then, some top women golfers have indeed become internationally very famous, such as Annika Sörenstam and Lorena Ochoa.
